Early Life

Benjamin Franklin was born on January 17, 1706, in Boston, Massachusetts. He was the fifteenth of seventeen children born to Josiah Franklin, a candlemaker, and Abiah Folger Franklin. Franklin's father was a Puritan and his mother was a Quaker. Franklin was raised in a religious household and attended church regularly. He was a bright child and learned to read and write at an early age. He also developed a love of science and experimentation.

Career

At the age of 12, Franklin began working as an apprentice to his brother James, a printer. He learned the printing trade and became a skilled craftsman. In 1723, Franklin left Boston and moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He worked as a printer for several years and eventually established his own printing shop. Franklin's printing shop was successful and he became a wealthy man. He also became involved in politics and served in the Pennsylvania Assembly. He was a strong advocate for the rights of the colonists and opposed British rule.

American Revolution

In 1775, the American Revolution began. Franklin was a leading figure in the Revolution and served as a delegate to the Continental Congress. He helped to draft the Declaration of Independence and was one of the signers of the document. Franklin also served as the Postmaster General of the United States during the Revolution. He was responsible for organizing the postal system and ensuring that mail was delivered to the troops. Franklin also served as a diplomat to France during the Revolution. He helped to secure French support for the American cause.

Later Life

After the American Revolution, Franklin returned to Philadelphia and continued his career as a printer and statesman. He served as the first President of the Pennsylvania Abolition Society and worked to abolish slavery. Franklin also served as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention in 1787. He helped to draft the Constitution of the United States and was one of the signers of the document. Franklin died on April 17, 1790, at the age of 84. He is buried in Christ Church Burial Ground in Philadelphia.
